An Effective Deterrent for Dog Owners Who Don’t Want to Pick Up

Dog waste DNA management is a fairly new and strong science that can match poo found on the ground back to a registered dog, and essentially back to the owner who will then be responsible to pay a disciplinary fine.

While the initial process can be a bit overwhelming, we offer several packages to make it as easy as possible for you to start and maintain a Dog Poop DNA program on your property.

What we offer:

“We Handle Everything” Program (minimum 25 dogs)

PHASE ONE – REGISTRATION

We will hold several registration events throughout the month (min 2 hour event – $35/hour). Dog owners will be given swabs to collect their dog’s saliva along with providing basic tenant and pet information. Each swab collection will be carefully sealed and mailed to a DNA laboratory and entered into a database. The cost to register is $50 per dog ($35 for DNA processing, $15 service fee). You may choose to have service fees paid by tenants during the event.

PHASE TWO – INITIAL CLEANING

We perform an initial one time cleanup prior to collecting waste samples; This includes both dog waste and loose debris. It is important to clear the property beforehand in order to get a fresh start and avoid collecting any waste samples that may be too old or contaminated to provide DNA. Pricing is based on property size – an average of $80 for a 250 unit complex.

PHASE THREE – WASTE COLLECTION AND TESTING

For the next four weeks, we will come once per week to fully scoop the property as well as collect up to eight poo samples to send off for DNA testing to find a potential match.
*Why the limit? The tests may not always find a match. Whether the sample comes from an unregistered dog or the sample was too contaminated to analyze, you may end up stuck with the bill and have no tenant to pass the testing fee onto. We charge $40/hour for scooping (an average of $60 per week for a 250 unit complex). Each poo sample will cost $65 to process ($50 for DNA analysis, $15 service fee).

ESTIMATED COST FOR 100 DOGS: $7,610
POTENTIAL FEES PASSED ONTO TENANTS: -$7,080
YOU ONLY PAY: $530!

“You Set it Up For Us” Program (minimum 25 dogs)

The main difference in this program is that your staff will handle the process of registering the dogs that reside on your property. Rather than holding events, you can schedule times to meet with each tenant to gather a saliva sample. The DNA company (mrdogpoop.com) will send you DNA registration kits upon request.

Ongoing Testing & Maintenance

We recommend having us come at least once every two weeks, as a DNA sample should be collected from dog waste that is less than a week old and has not been subjected to too many environmental elements. On each service date, we will clear the property of dog waste and small debris, and mail up to 8 piles of waste to the the DNA laboratory.

On a quarterly basis, we will also send out a pet waste tracker report showing how much we are scooping as well as suggested locations (if any) for additional pet waste stations.

ESTIMATED COST: $50/service (for 250 unit complex)
ADDITIONAL FEE PER DNA TEST: $65
DNA LAB ANNUAL FEE: $1 per dog ($25 minimum)

Pros

  • Deters dog owners from not picking up. You should see a significant difference once the threat of a hefty fine is in place.
  • Most DNA expenses can be covered by pet fees and fines, therefore keeping your cost low.
  • Less poop, less clean up time. Without DNA fines, apartments will usually need at least one weekly scooping of the property, but with less tenants leaving waste on the ground, you may only need once per month scooping.

Cons

  • Time consuming. Even with our help, you will need to keep track of new dogs being registered, issuing fines, and possibly facing tenants arguing a defense.
  • It is an expensive cost up front. You will hopefully get most expenses back through fines, however some samples may not result in a match leaving you stuck with the cost.
  • “Grandfathered in” tenants. If tenants moved in prior to requiring dog DNA registration, they may not have to submit their dog’s DNA, therefore immune to being matched and issued any fines.
